WHO IS SCOTTY ROLLER?

As a little kid growing up in Orange County, California in 1977 when I first discovered drawing and how good it made me feel, I had the big dream of becoming an artist. Nine years later in 1986, I was asked by a band to draw a keg party flyer for them. That one flyer started it all. It took my lofty kid dream and made it a possibility. Five years and dozens of flyers after that, I sold my first real piece of art to pop star Stacey Q. They were Levi’s with matching white Vans shoes  I had drawn on with ink and bleach. That same week I was commissioned by the vintage store that sold the art to do a mural. At that point, my dream of being an artist was no longer a dream, it was something that I was in pursuit of to make reality.  I freelanced for years. Hustling commissioned pieces in all sorts of mediums, including the occasional band poster. I learned to do color separations by hand. I crudely learned to screen print from a friend so we could make our own band t-shirts and stickers. I learned as much as I could from anyone I could and made art every single day, something I still do to this very day. In 2006 I took my first full-time job as an artist in a hot rod shop in Reno. Sadly, the business didn’t last long and so I continued as a full-time freelance commercial artist.

Thirty-seven years after I did that first flyer, I have done hundreds of posters for bands. I have designed countless album packages and covers for bands like X, Junkyard and Jared James Nichols. I’ve designed merchandise for bands like The Misfits, Suzi Moon and Supersuckers. I have commissioned paintings and art pieces in collections in California, Nevada and Texas. I’ve had art appear in the New York Times, The Rodder’s Journal and other publications nationally and internationally. These aren’t bragging rights in my mind but more reflective pillars. I guess it wasn’t really a dream as much as it was the hatching of a lifelong journey.

In my artistic work, I take all of the principals and mediums I’ve used for years in my posters and commercial work like screen printing, painting, lettering, collage, and drawing, and put them into each creation. I express social commentary through iconography and imagery of Gen X and mid-century era pop-culture as recurring themes. They are snapshots of what I’ve grown up with. Even if it’s a simple ink illustration on a panel. Stylistically, it’s done with influences I have taken in by learning to draw from studying 80’s skateboard graphics, MAD Magazine and even working at Disneyland Hotel. The process is not unlike The Ramones taking influence from The Shirelles and Shangri-Las and hearing similarities and subtle nods of them in Rock & Roll High School or Rockaway Beach.

I’ve been in bands since I was fifteen years old. At fifty, I continue playing in a band and fusing my life as a musician into my visual art and vice-versa. Music has always been a major influence in my life and art and it continues to be to this day. Growing up in Anaheim, California (hence the 714 in 714 Creative), living in Reno for twenty years and playing in The Saddle Tramps, I have now happily settled into the Austin, Texas suburbs with my wife and son and have never felt more creative and driven.
